The largest city planning project in the history of
the Community of Madrid
The concept for the Valdebebas project emerged
during the rezoning of the northwest sector of the capital. The area, which
encompasses a total of more than 10.6 million square meters, is one of the
most sought-after locations in the city. It is unique, complete place, where
extensive green spaces and modern urban design come together to create a
high-quality environment for living, working, learning and leisure, and
carefully planned infrastructures guarantee the best possible accessibility.
In the words of Spanish philosopher José Ortega and Gasset, the
city par excellence is classic and Mediterranean. The essential element
is the main square, the marketplace, a meeting point for conversation...
Thus, this classic large city evolved from the desire to be out and about
as opposed to staying at home, and to meet with others who also enjoyed
being out in the city environment. Keeping this idea in mind, Valdebebas
was planned as a mixed-use development, where people would live and work
near those very same places that serve as social hubs and meeting points.
The development includes the construction of approximately 12,500 flats,
of which 45% will have some type of public protection, as well as over
1.2 million square meters for local shops, offices, businesses, restaurants,
hotels, a shopping center, etc.
