Green Spaces

A 470-hectare green 'lung', the size of Central Park and Hyde Park combined

The integration of five million square meters of green space -approximately half of Valdebebas- coincides with our vision of creating a new city, in which a focus on the environment serves as the base of an exceptional quality of life. With this aim, a network of tree-lined boulevards, urban gardens, local parks, urban squares and large natural spaces have been created. These will be areas for breathing in clean air, meeting up with friends and neighbors, and playing and practicing sports. And while the needs of the end user have been the priority, rationalizing the maintenance and management of these green spaces has also been taken into account.

The Woodland Park
The new urban area will be a compact development allowing for mixed use and the conservation of an enormous plot of land, the Woodland Park. It will be the true green "heart" and the focus of the new city. This green 'lung' five times larger than El Retiro Park in central Madrid will occupy nearly 470 hectares. This large park, fruit of the land transfer by the Valdebebas owners, will be managed by the City Council of Madrid, which is in turn responsible for its design, construction and maintenance. The park was inspired by the canopy of a tree and, when viewed from the sky, one can make out its silhouette. The forests in the park represent ten types of vegetation in the capital, with over 206,000 trees and 183,000 bushes.

The park's conception is eco-sustainable. It is connected to the recycled water network in Madrid and has three reservoirs with 88,000 cubic meters of recycled water that will provide service to the irrigation system and water circuit. There will also be a bicycle lane around its perimeter and an extensive network of walking trails.

Landscaped "Green Corridors"
In Valdebebas, all residential areas will be directly connected to the Woodland Park through what we have termed the Green Corridors. These 30-meter-wide gardened boulevards lead to the great green 'lung', representing an innovative resource to encourage the integration of the park within the urban districts and guaranteeing that each building within Valdebebas will be no further than 150 meters from a significant green area. These lovely corridors will also provide easy access on foot or by bicycle from all homes and places of employment to the Woodland Park.

The configuration of the green spaces and the activities they encourage arise from a usage analysis of neighboring plots of land. Owing to the zone's usage as a meeting point, zone of rest, play and leisurely strolls, they will be fully landscaped with mature trees, bushes and climbing plants, as well as zones destined for play and recreation. Site furnishings included several different types of benches, tables, bins, bicycle racks and water fountains. Each section of the development boasts a different species of tree, to help shape neighborhood identity and create harmonious landscaping.
