At Valdebebas one of our core values is conserving the surrounding environment
and creating a city based on a sustainable development model. In each phase
of the project, we have carried out extensive environmental studies in order
to minimize the impact of the urban development works and ensure favorable
conditions for the area. We have worked tirelessly to restore degraded areas
and conserve both the natural and cultural heritage, with the aim of creating
better public spaces for the future city. We are pioneers in the implementation
of programs such as the Environmental Watch Study (EVA) and the regeneration
of natural spaces, such as the riverbed of the Arroyo de Valdelasfuentes.
Regeneration and Protection Projects
Some noteworthy projects include:
- The regeneration of the Arroyo de Valdebebas riverbed (4 km long) and
the recovery of the network of droving roads that crisscross the development
- The restitution of a 1.5 million square meter area used as a inert debris
dumpsite and its integration into the vast network of green spaces
- The movement of 12 million cubic meters of earth within the area in order
to reshape the land
- The reutilization of topsoil in parks and gardens
- The relocation of existing trees to more ideal locations
ISO 14001
The Valdebebas Owners´ Management Board, as the body responsible for
carrying out the urbanization project, has advocated the implementation,
development and improvement of the Environmental Management System in accordance
with the requirements of standard UNE EN-ISO 14001:2004.

Obtaining this
environmental management certification accredits that Board activities,
both the management of the design and the executed construction initiatives,
are done with full respect for the environment. This new recognition,
awarded by the Spanish Association of Normalization and Certification
(AENOR) also marks a milestone in the history of certifications for environmental
management systems, as this is the first Owners´ Management Board
in Spain to receive national recognition on environmental management.
Environmental certification in accordance with EMAS
regulations
he Valdebebas Owners´ Management Board was recently recognized as having
the highest level of environmental management systems. It was awarded with
the Environmental Certification in accordance with stringent European EMAS
Regulations (EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme).

The Spanish Association
of Normalization and Certification (AENOR) was the accredited certification
entity that signed off on the efficiency of the environmental management
system implemented in our offices and throughout the sector. Board regulations
stipulate absolute compliance with all legislation in force, moving towards
even stricter commitments than those that had been established, favoring
business competitiveness and fostering innovation and progress. This new
recognition marks a milestone in the history of certifications for environmental
management systems as it is the first Owners´ Management Board in
Spain to obtain the EMAS environmental certificate.
Environmental Vigilance Study (EVA)
This is a pioneering study that materializes the environmental policies
outlined by the Valdebebas Owners´ Management Commission (today the
Owners´ Management Board) and the Regional Ministry of the Environment.

This study takes
into account the implementation and monitoring of the measures defined
in existing environmental reports and is comprised of the following programs
or areas of activity:
- Atmospheric Contamination Surveillance Program
- Noise Pollution Surveillance Program
- Land Protection Surveillance Program
- Groundwater Protection Surveillance Program
- Hydrology System Surveillance Program
- Ecological Restoration and Replanting Surveillance Program
Debris Dumpsite Study
The study defines the proposal to seal landfills and an extensive network
of piezometers (small diameter water wells used to control groundwater).
Additionally, an agreement was reached to carry out a study of the migration
of existing gases.
Noise Pollution Studies
These studies guarantee that the zoning proposed in the Valdebebas Master
Plan minimizes noise pollution and ensure the continued analysis of noise
emission levels in the future urban development, thus providing a present
and future picture of noise emission in the development.
